XnView 2.42 crashes upon "save" or "save as" attempt

XnView 2.42 crashes upon "save" or "save as" attempt.

This is a new problem to develop in the last few weeks under the same system and OS.
for example:
I'm doing a screen capture "Alt+printscreen"
in XnView I select "import clipboard"
whether or not I crop the image when I click on "save" or "save as"
XnView crashes and exits.
Same thing if I open an image file in XnView and attempt to "save" or "save as".
However, If I select export and then save on the intermediate dialogue window it seems to work.

System is:
Windows 10, current
Intel core I7
16 GB DDR4

PS checking the "NEVER ASK AGAIN" during a save has no effect, next time it is the same old question.

I can't reproduce, in which format do you save?

I don't even get to choose the format!
