XnView Classic and XnView MP are different softwares, XnView MP the current, enhanced, version under active development. :D

My understanding is that there is only one version of each release, free for private and educational, a licence required for commercial use, and an option for anyone who wishes to donate to support development, and that a licence currently covers use of both softwares.

Many thanks for reply: you're essentially saying Classic and MP are different softwares,

however, how do their features compare - similar, different, the same ?

is there a comparative list available ?

cheers

Nominally the same uses, but XnView MP is newer, has full Unicode support which is important for some users, and is cross-platform enabling use on Mac and Linux operating systems; and benefits in particular for from enhanced file browser image management options.
... is there a comparative list available?
I'm afraid not, all xnview software is the work of a single developer, and what very limited documentation is available has been produced by volunteers and is in many case now out of date...

There is, however, a certain amount of support available on the forum. Best to install 'MP if you haven't already done so, and then explore the many options available in the attractive modern interface!

who cares about cross-platform on windows? market share of both max&linux is below than 20%. let THEY use a MP if they want it.
any statistics about how much mac users use it?
linux market share is 4%.
Unicode? add this. don't abandon the app for the sake of alleged "Unicode" and other unnecessary things.

"newer", "enhanced" - it is WORSE. see my other post.

You are free to continue using XnView Classic if you wish to, or move to a different software, but many users comment very positively about XnView MP especially the enhanced file browser options... :P

read my other post. no information what has been "enhanced". in my experience, it's the opposite.
