XnView Software

Hi there:

I found that there is a XnView folder under my %appdata% folder,
but there's nothing in this XnView folder.

Can somebody tell me what it is for ?

And I also found that everytime when I set a picture as wallpaper,
XnView creates a BMP file under %appdata%.
So, if I use XnView to set pictures as wallpapers many times,
there will be lots of BMP files - they really waste my disk space

I wanna ask if it is possible to create only one BMP file as wallpaper ?

- That folder is used too for another purpose ! If you set a "Favourite" list in the browser, it shall be saved as :

C:\windows\Application Data\XnView\bookmark.ini

- It's your own choice to create BMPs as wallpapers or not ! If you wish to keep many ones, you can pack them as ZIP or RAR etc., this decreases the size a lot ! Just keep one on use "as is". You can always unpack one if you want to change your wallpaper… Packing / unpacking is easy with Total Commander which has these built-in functions, for instance…

Well, maybe you misunderstood what I meant.

I hope I can describe it more clearly
- Now I use XnView to view a picture and use the "Set as wallpaper" function.
- Then there will be a "xnview_wallpaper_20050615.bmp" under my %appdata% folder.
- If I use XnView to view the same or another picture the next day,
and also set it as wallpaper by XnView's "Set as wallpaper" function.
- Then there will be a "xnview_wallpaper_20050616.bmp" under my %appdata% folder.

So, XnView will automatically create a BMP file according to the date.

Many programs which can set wallpaper use similar way to store the wallpaper, but commonly they use only one file to store the wallpaper. Are you sure that XnView don't delete the old wallpaper before setting new wallpaper?

The wallpapers should be saved inside %appdata%\XnView directory, not outside in %appdata%, this is the whole problem. Unfortunately many applications tend to put their stuff directly in %appdata% instead of creating an own subfolder there like expected, it's a real mess.

I hope this will be fixed, it really doesn't look too good...

Under v1.74, it did so.
But now, v1.80 doesn't.
You can check this out by yourself

- Indeed, Nelson is right : the wallpaper BMP is placed in the root of <windows\Application Data> here too, not in the …\XnView directory.
- Odd : I tested, it works, though… Small

- However, about the HD used space, it's the same, as well inside as outside the "legal" appropriate folder… Personally, I never use a wallpaper (even under Xp-Pro with 1 GB RAM), but I guess that packing a collection to keep it is a good solution…

Can anyone explain why it's necessary to create a new BMP file according to the date ?

Every time I set a picture as wallpaper, XnView creates a xnview_wallpaper_<Date>.bmp under "%appdata%\XnView".

If I set it as wallpaper via XnView_Shell, there will be a xnviewshell_wallpaper.bmp under "%appdata%\XnView".

Can anyone tell me why it needs to create so many wallpaper files ?
Why not just ONE xnview_wallpaper.bmp or something ?

Though almost every user doesn't care, it really wastes disk space.
If there is a BMP file with 1024x768 dimension created everyday, it wastes about 60MB per-month.
