Making a filter effect take effect

Thank you for registering here and reporting your problem, Martin. AFAIK, there's no known problem in the area of filters. Which filter do you use? Do you confirm the "Filter" dialog with "OK" button? Could you perhaps capture a short video which shows the problem?

filter -effects - enhance - enhance focus - parameters -apply to image, ok.
and nothing happens in the main photo .. although when I want to leave editing, the program wants to save something, but I do not see any change in the main photo, while in that mini window you can see the focus of the original photo.

Thank you for your extra information, Martin. I think I understand your problem, now:
When using the "Enhance Focus" filter, in the preview of the Filter dialog ("After") it looks as if a big change was made to the image. But when checking "Apply to image" confirming with "OK" it looks as if nothing has happened. Reason for this is that in Filter dialog XnView uses a small thumbnail of your image only. When applying effects on a thumbnail of your image it has much more impact than applying the same on the original image.
Basically all filters have an effect on your image and you can make this effect visible:
Before opening the Filter dialog please zoom into your image and set zoom to 400% for example. Then, open the Filter dialog - you should see that the Enhance Focus filter does affect the image and does change it. Uncheck and check "Apply to image" to clearly see the change in the image.

Or enable the checkbox option 'Apply to image'? [Based on XnView MP, I assume it is also in 'Classic].

That worked well for me recently, but if the filter effect can only be sufficiently assessed when zoomed in, then yes, use the dialog zoom option.
