Supporting this.
I think not greying out outside the selection is the biggest downside of XnView.

I think an easy solution could be a fade% option in the settings, quick solution, and not interfering with other uses.
There could be more Options, but that would maybe have the highest ratio of work vs effect.

The feature request of this topic has now since been included natively in XnView MP :)

there is even an upcoming custom .Ini tweak for users to disable the 'shade selection' too.
