Editing a multi-page file with many pages

When the pages of a multi-page file with many pages are edited, saving the whole multi-page file after each page is edited can become very slow:

If there were a way of saving the changed pages [caching them?] until editing is complete, and then saving the whole edited file just once, that would be a substantial improvement...
