I like to suggest an additional option:
"Show first thumbnail as preview", which means that the first image of the active folder will be shown as preview.
I personally would like that behaviour by default, but perhaps other users won't like it - therefore the option.

Where should that thumbnail be shown? Instead of the folder icon? In the Preview panel? Should it be the first thumbnail of the current dir? Or a thumb of the first image of the folder under the cursor?

Like in ACDSee, four images from the folder. Here is how it looks like:

I think Lesmo16 meant that the first image should be automatically highlighted when XnView sarts up, at the moment nothing has focus.

Wow, sorry, I understood it my way. But anyway, it will be a good feature to show thumbnails on the folder icon.

Yes, that's what I've meant - and the highlighted thumbnail should be shown as preview.

But certainly make that an option, if implemented. When I start XnView in a folder with
a.tif (100 MB)
z.jpg (10 KB)
I certainly do not want XnView to automatically select the TIFF and show a preview of it.

I guess, this is the reason (and really reasonable) why xnview doesn't show first thumbnail as preview at start...
Lesmo, you can just press any arrow at start...

... therefore it should be an
option ...

Sure I can - but I won't - because I have to do it not only at start-up but everytime changing the folder too.
And remember - I've requested it as
option .
