I like #2. The light can't be mistaken for a “tractor beam”, because it doesn't come from straight above but at an angle.

Yes but #3 is more in line with the rest of the interface. #3 is a definite winner for me, I really like it.

That black+white icon of #2 won't look so suitable on current Darker XnView MP themes.

Hi,

I don't found such function
It's in the latest XnView MP, see here: http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.p ... 248#p95991 - The function is similar to Start/Stop [GIF] Animation (multipage icon).

Which 'spotlight' icon will you use/put on your demopage? I voted #3 as the best I really liked.

who is Yingchun5207 ?? :?

I like #2. It's essentially perfect.

#1 does indeed remind me of "beam me up, Scotty" or "The Rapture" and #3 and #4 are too complicated for small icons while communicating too many different memes to be succinct. One might confuse them with "slide show"...

John, yes #2 is 'ok' ....I certainly think the choice here comes down to #2 or #3 .

The thing I don't like about #2 is that it simply lacks color, it's just a plain black+white, and to me, won't look good amongst the other existing color-bound toolbar icons (If I was to custom place 'Spotlight' function/icon shortcut to the toolbar in Xnview MP).

Hi budz45!

That lack of color is a useful distinguishing feature that causes the icon to stand out from the other, more colorful, icons around it.

Though uniform appearance/style is an admirable aesthetic property of an icon set, it tends to make icons more difficult to distinguish quickly ("at a glance"), one from another, esp. at the small sizes used in menus and toolbars.

In the best of all possible worlds each icon in a set would look completely different from the others, but also share in the overall "style". Impossible, right? Well, not impossible but...

This is why I continue to say that icon design is the most difficult task in software!

...and Mezich is very good at it.

Ok John, you have point and always are eloquent about software matters :)

I am ok for either #3 or #2, I don't mind now.

EDIT:- the colored 'dots' are nice for "icon snapshot on/off" but I think must not confuse with the same colored dots metaphor used on 'ColourLabel' 16x16 icon

What is the difference between new "snapshot on/off" and current "capture" ?

The "capture" feature is in Browser view and is for screen capturing (desktop, active window, etc.) purposes..

The "Icon snapshot on/off" is a totally different feature and is used for icon files (all pages in single picture) viewing:
http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=18751
http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.p ... hot#p95991

mezich, just open a .ico file in latest XnView MP and press "Icon snapshot on/off" - you will see :P
