NEF file saved as JPG - small size only?

Hi! Am I missing something? I can view a NEF file (original, off-camera from a D40) but when I try to save as JPG I only get a screen-sized version. Also, I can't seem to even view the original NEF in more than screen-sized dimensions even though it shows proper size in the file info (3008 x2xxx).

Yes, XnView load the preview only

OK, thanks! I suspected that only the embedded JPG is extracted and viewed/saved but was not sure. Resizing JPG originals works fine.
