I also think solution #2 is better.
Only one thing to add is show/hide buttons in both directions.
So you can browse with only preview, only with tabs (when you have big thumbnails) or with both.
Another button would be good, to change separator horizontal/vertical.

ExifPro has such mode ON by default. If you select directory, you see all images in whole directory tree starting from selected directory. Sometimes it is comfortable.

I agree with Olivier_G, making separators thicker has no reason. You lose space and gain nothing (because resize button stays the same size).

It is absolutely different matter!
This XML thread is about easy database interoperation.
XMP is about describing images!

It is not so complicated. Label is exactly like rating, a kind of quick-category.

No, possible searches are: dog and John and play and ...= John playing with dog Jane or Margaret or ... = all images with Jane or Margaret not (dog and John and play and ...) = all other pictures than John playing with dog not (Jane or Margaret or ...) = all images without Jane and at the same time ...

User info tab

Maybe it is possible to add a tab to preview panel with User information? User can define items to display in it like Options>View>Fullscreen>Show information. User can put only interesting information in one place also when browsing. Added feature could be more formatting (like bold for only some t...

I did not mean to remove colors form Ratings, just bring Labels (colors) into attention.

My thoughts are: -Separate panel for preview is OK, but XnView interface is not flexible enough (like ExifPro for example) to support it. -Better to make application around workflows not characteristics of data. -I don't see use for Filters and History tab. We have filters on secondary toolbar. I wo...

"Current category only": I mean if you mark many categories (like "dog", "John", "home", "play" to find images of John playing with dog at home) it is uncomfortable to unmark categories one-by-one. It is easier to unmark with "Current category only", which unmarks all selection boxes and makes last ...

Thinner separators, and double-click

Don't you think that separators for tree panel and preview panel are too thick and they should be thinner?

Please add double-click on separator to hide/show panel.
