hoping it's not an issue to reply to such an old post. But it is now years that I have this issue in XnViewMP, and that I wanted to file a bug about it; but, as always, as I had found a workaround, I postponed the writing of this message.

just some more information about that bug:

it looks like in fact any modification, removes all metadata which was in the image previously. For instance, adding IPTC metadata, also removes the EXIF metadata;
I forgot to warn that I have ExifTool libraries installed; I didn't test yet, to ...

Yep, that's what I feared :| ... I guess that such a bug would not last too long if it would occur everywhere...

To be honest I didn't search the forum too much about such a bug — it's bad, I'm truly ashamed :| ... but I tried a little bit and was not too ...

be careful because near (not far) of this menu "EXIF Thumbnail - Rebuild" you also have "Clean..." and that can delete by inadvertence all meta ...
