yes I have found the best way to hope the categories are applied is to select a few photographs, then click in blank space so the keywords can be applied.. When you click on a categorie, nothing is written in XMP metadata?

no when I tick a category nothing seems to happen to the xmp or iptc, I have tried a number of programs including exiftool to confirm this ?

I have no idea why,

mostly I can rely on it just adding the main keyword and nothing from the sub categories.

I did notice that when I briefly re enabled "import XMP subject or IPTC keywords to DB categories" things seemed to be working,, but I removed a few categories that got imported and then decided to disable to importing of xmp/ keywords adn things seemed strange again.. i need to do some more testing...
