I experience the same thing (i.e. very slow start on first start with XnViewMP 64bit) since few years now. On each new release I expected this to improve, but nothing changed.
I experienced this with Vista, with 7 and now 8.1, all 64bit.
I am not using any antivirus on neither systems.

images won't open with 0.75 fresh install but open if upgrad
I installed a fresh Windows Vista 64 bit and then installed XnViewMP 0.75 64 bit. The file type registration was ok (image file icons have become the "classic" ones for XnView), an image is viewed ok when opening inside XnView in browsing mode, but when double clicking an image it opens the "Open ...

Re: how can I convince XnView to sort order same as system ?
I did not realize that "Name(not numeric)" field is not available when we right click the header.
And I was not aware about what the item "Name (not numeric)" does in XnViewMP menu sort order list.
By reading this thread, at least that solved somewhat my original question: although it does not ...

Re: how can I convince XnView to sort order same as system ?
This has nothing to do with my question. I know how to sort order in ascending or descending, but either in browser mode or in view mode XnView will display in this order (if in ascending mode)

Re: view only images?
In the end I completely deleted the XnView user .ini file and re-configured the program settings again from scratch. Now it displays – respectively it skips – correctly all specified formats, according to my settings. Most likely, previously I misused the file exclusion list and/or the programs ...

how can I convince XnView to sort order same as system ?
I changed the sort order of filenames on my system (WinVista x64) the classic way, i.e. first is 02052014433.jpg and then 2014-03-17_145659.jpg. However, XnView insist to consider 2014 smaller than 02052014433 and displays that one first.

Re: view only images?
This does not seem to work, at least on my system it tries to open an .xls file then crashes, or it tries to open an .url file then crashes (or locks up so I have to kill xnview.exe task), this inspite both xls and url are on that list.

Re: XnView MP happens to hang 50% CPU process after closing
Don't know what means "quick". In a folder with 1311 .jpg images from Nokia N8 (454 being 4000×3000 and the rest 4000×2248), from opening first -> keep pressing PAGE DOWN -> to last image displayed it takes 2 minutes and 10 seconds with "Read one image ahead" OFF and 2 minutes and 15 seconds with ...

Re: XnView MP happens to hang 50% CPU process after closing
In that folder, yes. Almost all there are taken with my Nokia N8 (but this is less important, it happens the same, although more rarely, on another one containing 1600×1200 pixels images taken with an older Sony Cybershot).xnview wrote: and you have only jpeg files??

Re: XnView MP happens to hang 50% CPU process after closing
Useless in this context, because I keep "Closing last tab exits XnView" checked.

Re: XnView MP happens to hang 50% CPU process after closing
I don't know how to close view mode only but keep XnView MP open.
You should click on red 'X' on the tab above the photo.

Re: XnView MP happens to hang 50% CPU process after closing
The background thread which builds the thumbs works till it finishes the folder.
Myes, could be, only that I was expecting that it never tries to build thumbnails when in viewer mode (why should bother with something I never see ?)
When you say "after closing' you mean after closing XnView MP ...

Re: XnView MP happens to hang 50% CPU process after closing
True, it's dual core, never think in this regard about that 50%.
But thumbnail ?
1. Why would try this in viewer mode ?
2. .mp4 is not on its viewable file types, at least all video category is unchecked in settings and this is also the actual behavior: when scrolling through pictures it never ...

Re: XnView MP happens to hang 50% CPU process after closing
No, not in fullscreen (I rarely use fullscreen). Happened right now: just open a picture from a folder (this time containing 146 .jpg images mixed with 26 .mp4 video files, but this is just random situation), quickly scrolled forth and back several times searching for a particular picture, ESC ...

XnView MP happens to hang 50% CPU process after closing
From time to time it happens that XnView MP remains somehow locked as a background process, consuming exactly 50% CPU processor in task manager.
