Good point. At the moment this single icon at the bottom looks just wrong but I don't have a good solution at hand, yet.

Easy. Do NOT forget that we have 16:9 / 16:10 monitors for 3:2 in vast majority or more rarely 4:3 photos. Hence the best layout would be with vertical toolbars like this:
