They are both based on VP8. The only thing that i could figure out was that converting a gif to webm via http://video.online-convert.com/convert-to-webm will not cause it to play back properly (you dont get to see the image, although the seek bar shows the animation playing). I have another webm that i downloaded from somewhere and xnview will play it just fine and can play back the sound.
Mediainfo shows that the one that works in xnview was created using "mkverge 6.1" and written using "libemi 1.3 and libmatroska 1.4" while the one that doesnt work in xnview was created using "lavf55.36.100". Both use WEBM VP8.
I know that xnview doesnt officially support webm files but why can it play some back just fine then? Im trying to find a low file size format to convert my .gif files to that will work in xnview.
I would post the two files but they are not considered worksafe, i can PM it to anyone if they want to do a comparison though.
Edit : Just tried converting a gif to webm using https://cloudconvert.com/gif-to-webm and it wont work in xnview either, i can see lots of white space, artifacts, and the image only starts to form in the last second of the playback.
Why can xnview play back some webm files but not others?

Okay i just picked a random gif from a video game and converted it to webm.
Lots of whitespace and artifacts : http://webm.host/8ae59/. It plays fine in firefox but not in xnview.

XnViewMP Linux X64 - Debian - X64

What has that got to do with the underlying issue of why xnview can play some webm files and not others?
