As I stated in an earlier post in this thread To do this, go image->convert to colors and pick an option. Simply open the image in Xnview, click the "image" option at the top, go to "convert to colors" and then choose an option. The menu is divided into 2 sections, the top section is adaptive, the b...

Lossy? Lossless? 256 colors? This is confusing!

This is to provide some answers about lossy vs lossles, color reduction, and dithering. Some formats, such as JPG, JNG, and lossy JP2 are "lossy". This means that they throw away some data every time you save the image. How much they throw away depends on the quality setting you choose. Usually this...

1) If you don't reduce the colors beforehand, Xnview will save it as a true color PNG (this also explains the large size. Truecolor PNGs make pretty large files, but are absolutely lossles, and are the second smallest lossless format. JP2 is the smallest.) 2) For any text on a solid background, firs...

1016 1111
I just ran a test making a PNG with Xnview, then using the PNGout standalone prog to compress it further:

XNview: 1,111 bytes.
Image

PNGout recompressed: 1,016 bytes (nearly a 10% savings).

Actually, I was just thinking of making another FAQ about lossy vs lossless and color limitations. There's a lot of ground to conver on the subject, and I think it would work best as a seperate FAQ.

See THIS thread for more info on GIFs and PNGs and other formats. Near the bottom explains about lossy vs lossless. Gifs are a lossless format, no information is thrown away when you save the image (whereas lossy formats such as jpg throw away some info every time you save the image). However, gif i...

Yep, except for the filesize, all the above images are identical to each other. I see on the site that there are currently 3 versions of PNGout, a windows exe, a linux exe, and the irfan plugin. It doesn't look like Ken Silverman releases the source to PNGout, but it does look like he's willing to m...

PNGout

The recent update to irfan has a new plugin that allows for excellent compression of PNG images. Apparently PNGout has existed as a prog for a while, but was only recently made into a plugin for irfan (or any other prog), here's PNGoput's homepage: http://advsys.net/ken/utils.htm I have found that t...

Can't open certain .PSF files

Xnview 1.74 can't open .PSF files when they were saved at 100% quality. Oddly, ones that were saved at 99% quality (or less) work fine. I don't know much about the .PSF format, but I'm assuming that 100% quality is lossless and that xnview can only handle lossy PSF files. Here are 2 examples: http:/...

Common graphic formats

This is to answer some questions about the strengths, weaknesses, and usage of some of the more common image formats. PNG: PNG comes in 2 flavors, truecolor and indexed. Truecolor PNG: Should not be used on the web due to large file sizes. Great for archiving, master copies, or any other situation w...

Yeah, some kind of cache would be great. The installed plugins don't change often (people usually grab all the plugins they want when they initially download the prog), and the info xnview gets from the plugins (almost?) never changes, so re-aquiring that info each and every time is redundant. Cachi...

1) PNGs are always lossLESS, regardless of interlaced or not. In most cases, interlacing will increase the filesize, but in some it may reduce it. Interlacing saves the file in a slightly different fashion than non-interlacing and thus results in a different filesize, but it does not change the fact...

Plugins slow to load

Xnview is slow to load when you have plugins installed. Without plugins, it loads instantly. With plugins, it takes several second to load them before you can do anything with the program. This long load time is the primary reason I prefer irfanview over xnview (even though xnview handles more forma...
